Really clear sky’s in the Bay Area today. I could see the snowy cap of Mt. Diablo from the hills here in Larkspur. Had fun painting the view until I got rained out once again.

The big storm hitting Marin took out the power at my apartment this afternoon so I went for a little adventure in the rain. I headed over to Phoenix lake to check out the overflowing spillway. On the north end of the lake I found this nice view of some redwoods on Shaver grade. This is just before the Eldridge crossroad. I probably should have painted the flooding creak behind me but I liked the light on the road better.

After two weeks of Covid isolation I was finally out of the house with a very long to do list. Yesterday I built a set for the school play and this morning the boys and I got a Christmas tree. I had to drive up to the ranch to find all of our lights and ornaments. The fall colors there were really nice so took a long overdue painting break and set up just south of my Uncle Jim’s, Looking towards my cousin Steve’s place. Bob Johnson, stopped by to say hello while I was painting and we had a very nice chat about the state of the arts. Then I was back on the road south to Marin.

Morning painting at the ranch, looking north towards Uncle Jim’s house. The daisies were out in force and the weather was perfect. I had a lot visitors which is rare while out in the field, my mom, aunt and cousin all stopped to say hello.

I hiked up to the lake to try and find some redwoods. My sister says I don’t paint redwoods enough. My usual excuse it that they are so big I can’t find a decent composition. The only way to paint redwoods site size is to be really far away. I went to the lake with the idea that I could use the water to put some distance between me and them. I’m glad I went, Its so satisfying to see the lake full again. Lots of water.

This morning I drove out to the creek behind my uncle Jim’s house and painted the view looking west. It’s still very smokey in the valley which adds a lot of depth to the landscape but it was painfully hot so I didn’t have much fun today. We are in the middle of a heat wave and I being a fool, forgot both my hat and water. By ten thirty I had had enough. 1.5hr
