Another lunchtime painting. This is the view looking east from the Presidio Chapel on a foggy summer afternoon.

Lunchtime painting in the Presidio once again.

If you are heading to the Phoenix Lake trailhead from Ross, you need to take Lagunitas Rd to get there. I’ve run or ridden my bike down this road hundreds of times, and there’s one thing that always catches my eye. Right before the hills crest, there is a house with these amazing hydrangeas.

I’m not sure what these plants are called, but I love how their flowers dry out and turn pale in the summer. Every time I ride or run past this bramble, it catches my eye. I woke up early this morning for no reason, so I headed out to paint them.

It was a hot, clear day out in Sonoma. After a long morning run in the vineyards, I set up in the shade of an oak tree to paint. My mom was very excited about a small Rhododendron that was blooming. It had been years, and this particular bush had never produced any flowers. Perhaps it has something to do with all the rain we received after years of drought.

While waiting for my brother and nieces to finish their farm chores, I painted a cherry tree in their little orchard. It was fun to watch the girls help drive a tractor and watch the border collies help drive some goats. All in a day’s work on the farm.

Staring at neon orange poppies surrounded by shiny white cement and chrome electrical boxes for an hour was a painful experience. It felt like my eyes were going to shrivel up in their sockets by the time I called it quits and packed up to go home. It was impossibly bright, and I think I seared this image onto the back of my retina.

I had a hour to paint between rummaging through storage and the rare no kids dinner reservation with Zeldie. The Pride of Madeira at my moms was pushing out its spikes so I set up in front of it not wanting to waste any time looking for something new.

I set up in my brothers driveway for a quick painting and as I was finishing up, to my surprise, it started to rain.

Quick oil sketch this afternoon of the marsh across the street.
