Fly Boy

I finally broke down and bought Zbrush. All I can say is that it was SOOOoooo worth it! So far I love it.  I’ve been geeking out on it for the last two weeks. Its great!

Having spent so much of the last year clawing my through Maya, working in Zbrush is like a great big breath of fresh air. Thank you Pixologic! It took a day or two to learn the basics but by the end of the first week I was already beginning to do some interesting work. There is a bit of a learning curve but its nothing compared to Maya. Wow, Its so nice to worry about the design and not the technical aspects of the project for a change.  I’m glad I learned the tech stuff but too much of it will drive you mad.

I’ve already modeled and painted up a few things but they are for a feature and so I can’t put them on line.   So to share I roughed out this little fly character.  He’s based on a doodle I did.   Like I said, i’m still learning the ropes so the pose is all stiff and there are somerendering artifacts but hey what do you expect right out of the box.   Still he’s kind of fun so I thought I’s share.

Flyboy on a cluttered set.

To test out Zbrush’s GoZ plugin I tossed him into a rough set and did a quick render. Just one button and you can jump back and forth. Its so easy I love it. The render took longer than the whole project. Ha!

Root- Time lapse

This is a time lape of me organizing some of the mess which is my home office.

I added a few bits of animation here and there just to make it interesting. The roots are a maya paint effects setup. For some reason it took way longer than I thought to render. Oh well, time flies when your having fun.

-update-
Oh, I should add that the time lapse was shot on a Nikon D700 using an AF-S Nikkor 14-24mm lens. The camera was set to shoot one frame every 20 seconds and it was all compress at 24fps. I composited the shot using TVPaint animation software.

Silas Has Balls

Motion tracking with Maya Live. Who needs to buy toys when you can just make virtual ones!

I took some video footage of Silas on his Jolly Jumper and added in geometry and a bunch of nparticle balls for him to play with. There are a load of tracking mistakes that I could have fixed if I had used a few more tracking points but I was lazy and wanted to explore around with other things. The hard part was keying in his feet so they could kick the balls. I had to do that part by hand. This took forever to render, which is one of the reasons I was trying to set up the PS3 maya mental ray satellite earlier in the week. That did work out so I just had to let the ‘ol mac crunch away for a day or two. I wanted my mac back for other things so I didn’t bother rendering reflections. It was a fun side project. I like it and might try to do a few more things like this. I want to do something with a matte painting next. Where should we send Silas? hmmm… the possibilities are endless.

This is the rough wireframe version.

TVPaint walkcycle

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCCQscl-i9s&hd=1

Recently I bought a copy of TVPaint animation to help me out with my storyboard work.

It has a wonderful interface for this and is much improved compared to its predecessor, Mirage. Playing around in it I made this quick little walk cycle to combat the boredom of waiting for maya to render. Ahhhh.. good ‘ol 2d. Instant gratification. Hand rendering is so much faster.

Caustics

Another maya rendering experiment, this time with caustics. I should have render the scene with more rays, as you can see the refracted points dancing on the walls behind. Still I kind of like the disco ball effect it gives off. I had fun with this one. enjoy.

Jello Cubes

This was one of my first attempts at building a sub surface scattering render node in maya. The cubes are a simple ncloth setup just running as a simulation.

Droplet

Maya Mental Ray fun. This morning I was playing around with fur for the first time and I thought it would be interesting to see it against something wet looking so I read up on shaders and build the water shader and attached it to an Ncloth spear. At first I struggled to get this to work with a final gathering pass but I had too much flicker even after adjusting my min and max radius’. In the end I faked the same look and got the render time down to a minute a frame from four. I faked all of the glows with animated lights.

same as above but with longer fur.

Sketchy mountain

Nothing special here, just a very quick, rough camera projection test I did while waiting for something in the oven.

Camera projection tests

A maya projection mapping test. Trying to hybrid 2d and 3d.

Recently I have been working on and off on camera projection tests.  Trying to find a way of making blendable 2d/3d environments.  One of the struggles is finding ways to eliminate hard edged. This is a work in progress.

The same maya projection mapping test.

This time with fern elements to test overlapping.

This time in anaglyphic stereo and with some random spears to test how the steroscopic effect works on a 2d/3d camera projection.
