Turned my camera towards the dreary landscape and was rewarded with some interesting footage. The Tola Harbour is well protected from the open ocean making it exceptionally calm, so calm that the wake trails from the passing boat are visible for miles.
Couldn’t sleep last night thanks to the storm outside the window here in Ma On Shan. Half asleep I mechanically stumbled through the dark and rigged a quick time-lapse setup. I wish I had been more prepared and awake. The camera batteries were at half, the drive was near full, the window glass was dirty and I didn’t have a tripod. A lot of mistakes for an old photog like me but eh, I still managed to get a few lightning bolts so I guess it worked out.

I made the long road trip from Vancouver to Northern California just before Christmas. SInce I was by myself I rigged the car with a tripod and my trusty Nikon D700 and made this time-lapse movie.
I shot the first day out the side window but the wind pushing on the lense proved to be problematic and it never stayed one hundred percent perpendicular. I had to stop a couple times to fix it. It was also freezing! Driving with the windows down in windows down is both loud and cold. I had to stop and buy gloves at one point cause my hands were freezing.
The second day it was raining and so I couldn’t leave the window open without lots of glare and raindrop blurring. Instead I did the default thing and shot out the front window. Not as interesting, if you ask me, since I’ve seen that shot a thousand times before. On winding roads with a slow frame rate it looks exceptionally bad. At night thought I tried to make the most of it by drawing with the light of my cell phone. I know texting is illegal while driving but I wonder if animation is? Maybe in the future I can expand on that idea. Till then here is the movie.
Yeah! The first snow of the year.
I got up early and set up my d700 to shoot some time-lapse footage and was rewarded with some nice shots. I thought I would make a snowman film for Silas and halfway through making it the neighbors saw what I was up to and joined in on the fun. It was a very fun morning.
winter is upon us
Virginia, Silas and I were at the park last night with our lanterns and mooncake for the annual moon festival. I had my camera, a tripod and a flashlight with me. Just for the fun of it I started playing around with some long exposures. Running around the park with my flashlight on got the attention of a couple of curious boys who proptly came over to see what Silas and I were doing. Together we had a great time making “light paintings” as their mother called them.

This is a time lape of me organizing some of the mess which is my home office.
I added a few bits of animation here and there just to make it interesting. The roots are a maya paint effects setup. For some reason it took way longer than I thought to render. Oh well, time flies when your having fun.

Oh, I should add that the time lapse was shot on a Nikon D700 using an AF-S Nikkor 14-24mm lens. The camera was set to shoot one frame every 20 seconds and it was all compress at 24fps. I composited the shot using TVPaint animation software.
