Lightning Storm

Couldn’t sleep last night thanks to the storm outside the window here in Ma On Shan. Half asleep I mechanically stumbled through the dark and rigged a quick time-lapse setup. I wish I had been more prepared and awake. The camera batteries were at half, the drive was near full, the window glass was dirty and I didn’t have a tripod. A lot of mistakes for an old photog like me but eh, I still managed to get a few lightning bolts so I guess it worked out.

In case you’re wondering that’s Tai Po Kau and the Tolo Harbour in the background.

Road Tripping

I made the long road trip from Vancouver to Northern California just before Christmas. SInce I was by myself I rigged the car with a tripod and my trusty Nikon D700 and made this time-lapse movie.

I shot the first day out the side window but the wind pushing on the lense proved to be problematic and it never stayed one hundred percent perpendicular. I had to stop a couple times to fix it. It was also freezing! Driving with the windows down in windows down is both loud and cold. I had to stop and buy gloves at one point cause my hands were freezing.

The second day it was raining and so I couldn’t leave the window open without lots of glare and raindrop blurring. Instead I did the default thing and shot out the front window. Not as interesting, if you ask me, since I’ve seen that shot a thousand times before. On winding roads with a slow frame rate it looks exceptionally bad. At night thought I tried to make the most of it by drawing with the light of my cell phone. I know texting is illegal while driving but I wonder if animation is? Maybe in the future I can expand on that idea. Till then here is the movie.

Busted

I’ve been rather busy as of late and haven’t had a lot of time to make art.

Last night I found myself with the odd bit of free time and so I jumped onto zbrush and made this quick bust. I was inspired by these massive sculpts by Javier Marin which are installed not too far from my house. His work is amazing and this doesn’t even come close to how mind blowingly wonderful his installation is. It took my breath away when I saw it. It is by far the coolest thing in Richmond, BC.

My little sculpt took about two hours to make start to finnish. As always the punchline is that the rendering took longer than the work.

Snow Day time-lapse

Yeah! The first snow of the year.

I got up early and set up my d700 to shoot some time-lapse footage and was rewarded with some nice shots. I thought I would make a snowman film for Silas and halfway through making it the neighbors saw what I was up to and joined in on the fun. It was a very fun morning.

winter is upon us

Flyboy revisited

A maya/zbrush sculpt.

For the most part I made this in zbrush 4. I retweeked the topology to work better for me in maya. It was rendered in zbrush with an AO pass. It took about a day to model and paint. For those who are into this sort of thing, below is the wireframe.

The City Gate

A rough model of a mountain city I made in Maya late one night last month. I may take it into zbrush and paint it up if I have time.It had been sitting in one of my folders for a while and I thought it would be best to share it before it fades away. Its fun. I like it.

Silas Time

Silas and I had a drawing adventure in the backyard today. I went to the local art store and picked up a tub of colored chalk and a couple tubes of finger paint. The morning rain had stopped and drawing outside on the porch just felt like a good idea. He thought so too.

Oh Rats!

Well I found out who was eating all the bird seed from the feeder and lets just say it wasn’t the birds.

I made this little time lapse movie to solve the mystery.

Gator loop

Here is a little gator run cycle I made last night in TVPaint.

I thought I was going to use it for the loading animation that plays when you click one of the the image links. It turns out the pictures load to fast to see the whole cycle so that ended up being pointless and so I made little spinning ball animation instead. You can see that play when you browse through the image links.

*UPDATE: no longer use a loading image*

Doggy Dog

The dog here was modeled in maya and then posed in zbrush using the transpose feature. I made him a few months back but never did anything with him. So rather than just letting him rot with everything else on my hard drive I thought I would stretch him out and share.

Also in glorious 3D!

yep, put on those old 3D glasses to see this stereoscopic version.
