Virtual Reality, circa 1938

Visited the birthplace of the view-master, aka the Oregon Caves. The caves themselves were awesome and wonderous yet it was a small sign off to the side near the lodge gift shop that caught my eye. Apparently, the little château here was the birth place of the view-master and in turn affordable mass-market stereoscopic imagery. William B. Grubber met Harold J. Graves while staying here, Grubber…

Stereo jungle painting

After hitting my head against the wall with gouache I jumped back to ArtRage 4 and my trusty digital oil paints. I wanted to play around with depth this time so I painted in layers that I could later be rip apart in Maya. The hope was to build a stereoscopic painting. I’ve done this before but this time I was searching for an easier way to edit the layers after they have been assembled in Maya. Couldn’t really figure that part out. I wanted to pull everything over to Zbrush but it doesn’t do transparency. And without transparency the illusion doesn’t work. I’m still looking for a good stereoscopic painting app.

The non-stereoscopic flat version of the painting.

This is what the painting looks like in maya.

And here is one of those 3D gif things to give you an idea of the effect.

I really hope nobody gets a seizure watching this.

Trippy new 3d glasses

3d glasses
tripping out with my new 3d glasses

I found a pair of plasitc 3d glasses at a dollar store today. Which is sort of a major upgrade from my paper ones.

Walking around the house with them on makes the real world looks so real. Its amazing! I felt like I could reach out and touch just about anything. These glasses are blowing my mind. I’t like i’m on drugs or something.

Camera projection tests

A maya projection mapping test. Trying to hybrid 2d and 3d.

Recently I have been working on and off on camera projection tests.  Trying to find a way of making blendable 2d/3d environments.  One of the struggles is finding ways to eliminate hard edged. This is a work in progress.

The same maya projection mapping test.

This time with fern elements to test overlapping.

This time in anaglyphic stereo and with some random spears to test how the steroscopic effect works on a 2d/3d camera projection.
