The Red Sketchbook

Lots of interesting drawings in this one.  This sketchbook is dated 2006-2007.  It documents my move from the US to Canada, the start of my professional career and the final days of my bachelor life.  It was the sketchbook I carried while working on Space Chimps, and when I started developing my Dragon project, Wakefield also begins to surface in its pages.  This book travelled with me to California, British Columbia, Costa Rica, Japan, Hong Kong, and Thailand.  Lots and lot of random drawings in here.  Have fun exploring.

Sketchbook Circa 2004

This sketchbook spans 2003-2004. I was finishing my MFA in animation at USC and beginning work at Vanguard Animation when this was drawn. The book covers a huge range of subjects and styles. I was really all over the place with this one.

Sketchbook circa 2003

This sketchbook was made while I was a student at USC Animation. It is dated spring to summer 2003. The bulk of the work explores a thesis proposal I was working on with Daisy Church called Kalifia. There are also a few drawings from Vanguard Animation in here. Daisy and I had just started interning at Vanguard while they were in production on Valiant. We were tasked with organizing the art library. While there I was inspired and spent my free time drawing. This got me noticed, the film packed up and moved to London but I stayed behind as a development artist for future projects.

Another sketchbook takes its place on the shelf

Victory! Another sketchbook takes its place on the shelf. This one took far too long to draw. It was actually overtaken by two smaller ones. I made the mistake of going detailed on the first page. This doomed me ’cause I had to hold the same quality through to the end.

Yes, some of the drawings are from a story i’m working on but they are exploratory and no the caterpillar has nothing to do with it.

The Grey Sketchbook: Part 3

The final third of the book. I would have had posted it sooner had I not misplaced the sketchbook. It went missing for a few days. After a good deal of stress and several fruitless searches I found it, of all places, in my drawing bag. Boy did I feel like a fool.

The Grey Sketchbook: Part 2

The second third of my pocket sketchbook. At this rate I should be able to finnish up within the week.

The Grey Sketchbook: Part 1

I’m working on a new pocket sketchbook. Quick, fast and loose this time. Most of it was drawn at the dinner table, while ridding the train or while watching my kids play. About half way through the book at this point. The rest to come shortly.

The Moth Sketchbook

For your amusement I present the unabridged contents of my latest sketchbook.

Most of the work is exploratory ideas for a feature film I have been dreaming up about giant moths. As part of my research for the film I have also been actively photographing and ID’ing Hong Kong wildlife on iNaturalist. If you are a nature buff I encourage you to check out iNat its a pretty incredible resource. A few of the critters from my nightly moth hunts have ended up on the pages below.

The book itself is a moleskin watercolor pocket, 3.5 x 5.5in. Its pretty small so on your screen the art may appear magnified. It was completed over the course of three months and drawn entirely in Hong Kong. I finished the last page on June 6th, 2013. Front to back, the medium is pencil and watercolor, with the occasional gouache touch up.

As always enjoy, let me know what you guys think.
