Jetpack Chase Boards

These are the roughs for the big jetpack chase scene at the end of the Space Chimps 2. It’s particularly memorable because my wife went into labour while I was working on it. This is also why it is incomplete.

Dick and Don Storyboards

Dick and Don go all the way back to elementary school days. They have evolved of course but stay true to their slap stick roots. I used to run a comic strip in the USC Daily trojan student newspaper with these guys. They are a lot of fun to draw.

This little sequence is part of a larger project I have been dreaming about. Someday I would very much like to expand it into either a video game or a feature.

In this scene Dick and Don, two american tourist, have just escaped from prison, and discovered to their surprise that they are in London. They have been framed and they need to find out why and by whom. Being handcuffed at the ankle though is going to make the search difficult.

Boomerang

Boomerang Girl is a film idea I was playing with a few months ago. The basic idea was to do something really fun, so I mixed together a bunch of my favorite things and wrapped a story around it. Here are a few panels.

Light Paintings

multiple flash exposure
multi me

Virginia, Silas and I were at the park last night with our lanterns and mooncake for the annual moon festival. I had my camera, a tripod and a flashlight with me. Just for the fun of it I started playing around with some long exposures. Running around the park with my flashlight on got the attention of a couple of curious boys who proptly came over to see what Silas and I were doing. Together we had a great time making “light paintings” as their mother called them.

Lazy River Camera Mount

Ok, at first this may not seem like it has much to do with animation but here are some sketches I made for a little lazy river time-lapse camera mount. My brother and I are pretty avid tinkerers and ever since I gave him an HDhero cam for his birthday we keep playing around with different camera mount ideas. He’s made a pretty decent surfing head mount system but I can’t shake the idea of building some sort of floating stand to follow us on our inevitable drunken float down the russian river later in the summer. We usually travel with an armada of friends and I just love the idea of documenting the trip as an epic time-lapse pixilation film.

My brother, mr. obvious, was quick to point out that we could do the same thing by just strapping a tripod to an inner tube. Yes, yes these are overly complex and unstable but they kind of have a suessian vibe that I like. Anyways, thought I would share. If the trip happens I will be sure to post the film.

Rough MonSTER model

I recently started to learn how to model characters in Maya. This is something I have been wanting to learn for a long time and just recently sat down and forced myself to do.

Working with ortho drawings, rough clay sculpts and having to depend on other people to build my designs has always been frustrating and played a big roll in motivating me to learn the process. Although learning to use the tools in maya has been a bit painful now that I am beginning to make some progress those pains are fading.

Below are some rough topology renders of my first character sculp. A Silly little monster character I started last week. Learning line flow and polygon placement has been a big challenge but my biggest challenge has been having to build expressionless neutral characters. The character designer in me has been going crazy with this and I can’t wait to move on to skinning and rigging so I break up all this boring symmetry. I’m almost at a point where I can move on to skinning so we’ll see what happens. I imagine I will have a lot of deform problems where the topology is too low res. Oh well, we’ll see! Until then, enjoy.

…and as a point of reference i also included a rough doodle I did after the fact to give you an idea of what the final character might look like. As for now I am just making this up as I go along.
