My first attempt at a portrait with oils. Thank you Zeldie for being patient and brave enough to model for me. Since I wasn’t painting outside I thought I would try something new and went with a Zorn pallet. This was a lot of fun. 1.5hr ala prima

Drove over to China Camp after work to paint the smoke from Napa and Sonoma. It made for a rather dramatic sunset as in blew in toward Marin. Good luck to all the family’s and fire crews in the path of the fires. Stay strong.

I painted the unkept hillside to the south of my house from my living room window. Gravity is slowly pulling this little staircase down the slope. I probably should do something to fix it before it rolls off a small cliff and into my car. That sounds like a lot of work to fix though so instead I’ll just ignore it for a little longer and keep painting.
I hand ground and mixed the green paint from some Gamblin Chromium Oxide Green Pigment.

A small officescape oil sketch I made before the Covid-19 quarantine went into effect.

Here is a quick sketch of the house plant next to my desk. I’m testing out some new oil paints I ordered from Natural Pigments. They have a very different feel than my usual Holbein Aqua Oil colors. I’m digging them but they will take some time to get used to.

A Persidio lunchtime painting from January. looking south from the picnic table at the Persidio Institute on a misty afternoon.

Looking west towards one of the Baker Beach overlook parking lots, in the Persidio, San Francisco. One of about twenty five Lunchtime paintings that I’ve made since the beginning of the year. My plan was to paint about two or three every week on my work lunch break. Hopefully I can get back into the office by summer. Until then, time to start painting the sites closer to home.

Looking west over Alexander Valley. This is a plein air painting I made in the family vineyards. We were experiencing a heat wave that day and I started melting after three hours in the sun, so I painted what I could then turned tail and retreated to a swimming pool. A few days later I cleaned it up in the home studio.
