Indian fire Road

I rode up Indian Fire Road to do a little painting this afternoon. It was a fine warm day but that all changed when that evil shadow crawled down the mountain and draped me in its icy embrace. I might as well have been standing in a snow drift. I folded up the painting gear and sprinted for home but I couldn’t out run the chilly darkness. I was so numb it took a long hot shower to stop my teeth from rattling and my toes to thaw. This months water bill will be one for the record books.

In the shade of the oaks

It was very hot and dry in Alexander Valley yesterday. I spent my afternoon standing in the shade of an oak grove on the family ranch, painting one of the oak trees that survived last years fires. The threat of fire was everywhere, still. Ash scars and burned out stumps are in the foreground. Smoke from the glass fire currently raging over the hill near Mt. Saint Helena drifted into the Valley and filled the landscape with an ominous warm haze. Once again it is a tinder box.

Sunset View of Fires in Napa

Drove over to China Camp after work to paint the smoke from Napa and Sonoma. It made for a rather dramatic sunset as in blew in toward Marin. Good luck to all the family’s and fire crews in the path of the fires. Stay strong.

Backyard Brush

I was supposed to cut down brush but instead I found the chaos lovely and picked up my brush instead. I excel at being both lazy and productive at the same time.

The driveway north

Another quarantine painting. This is the view looking down my driveway toward Terrace Ave, San Anselmo. In addition I made a time-lapse video of my painting process.

Gravel driveway

Painted on a freezing, wet and dull January morning. The boys were sick so I set up shop at grandmas house and while they watched cartoons near a lovely roaring fire I half froze to death while painting this sketch of my moms gravel driveway.

New Growth

This sketch is from late January. No thanks to the Kincade fire, the family ranch had been charred black for weeks, then we had our first rain and they magically turned a brilliant shade of green. I did my best to capture it.

Interesting side note, because the fires burned back all the grass it exposed a bunch of petrified wood in the area where I’m standing.

On Ring Mountain

Avoiding C19, people and our iPads, my boys and I escaped the house for a hike up Ring Mountain. It was a lovely day so I started a painting of neighboring Mt. Tam but by the end of an hour the kids had lost their patience and water so I was forced to make a premature retreat to the car. Back in quarantine, I continued to clean up the painting a bit while they continued their adventuring in Minecraft.
